Counselling

counselling, hand holding new life

Obtaining legal advice is only one aspect of the divorce process.

We believe you deserve support and advice before, during, and after your divorce as it can be useful in helping you cope with the strong emotions you are feeling which may include crisis, traumatic loss, anger, depression and fear about an uncertain future.

Counselling allows you a chance to explore complex or difficult issues in a safe and confidential environment, and helps you take time out from your situation and see it from a fresh perspective. Working with a counsellor gives you a chance to think about what you can do to change your situation for the better. It provides you with an opportunity to tell your story, discuss what it was you and your ex partner brought to the relationship and by so doing bring increased understanding to your situation.

Why use a counsellor?

Many people find that they benefit from sharing their troubles with a trained counsellor. Being able to talk about your thoughts and feelings, without fear of being judged or criticised, can be a tremendous relief. To feel valued and accepted and not to be given advice can lead to a new energy and acceptance of oneself. A trained counsellor can help to unravel old and new conflicts alike, help you decide what you want for yourself, without feeling guilty or beholden to others. Sometimes people need to re-visit past traumas, as a way of coming to terms with them and moving on, and your counsellor will always treat you with respect and be completely non-judgmental.

The benefit of in-house counseling

Referring you to outside counsellors can take months on waiting lists, escalating feelings of despair and uncertainty. In order to help you and provide a rounded service we offer an in-house counselling service available without delay.

What happens at a counselling session?

At your first session our in-house counsellor Terry Timlett will talk with you for up to one hour. Some people find this session is all they need to clear their thinking and help them decide what to do and no further counselling is necessary. Terry will talk through how counselling might be able to help and aim to re-build your confidence and self-esteem by looking at the choices and options open to you. The counselling service Terry provides is completely confidential.

How much does it cost?

If you are publicly funded (legal aid or legal help), counselling may be available at reduced rates. It can cost from as little as £10 up to a maximum of £40 for an hour-long session.

When is Terry available?

Terry works Wednesday and Thursday 9am - 5pm, but appointments may be available at other times convenient to you and in conjunction with a visit to see one of our solicitors. For further information please call Terry on 01392 421777.
