Pressure to be supermum is spoiling parenthood

Saturday, 10 November 2007

Pressure to be a ‘supermum' is spoiling the enjoyment of being a parent according to a poll by national charity Parentline Plus. The survey shows how the stresses and strains of bringing up children in the 21st century are taking their toll on many parents.

The online poll by Parentline Plus asked: ‘Do you feel under pressure to be a super mum?'

More than 500 people voted with an overwhelming number - 416 votes (79.1%- saying yes and it's taking away the enjoyment of being a parent.'The charity believes that many mothers are fraught juggling work, dealing with financial insecurities or long distances between family and friends with raising their children.

At the same time there are regular headlines about parents being threatened and blamed when things go wrong."Eventually, something has to give and it is a real shame if this pressure starts to affect the quality of family life," said Dorit Braun, Chief Executive of Parentline Plus. "As long as parents feel blamed for their children's difficulties, they can feel very stigmatised and this can make it very hard for them to seek help when they need it"

All families have difficulties from time to time and we are keen to get the message across that parents are entitled to support when they need it and in ways that suit them, their children and their circumstances.
