Fathers and Grandparents review for greater access to children after separation

A comprehensive review of the family justice system was announced last month to give fathers and grandparents greater access to children after separation.

There will be measures to give grandparents rights to see grandchildren if families break down, as well as greater support for extended family members if they look after children rather than have them taken into care. The measures are part of the Families Green Paper that will form a key part of Labour’s election manifesto. Rival policies will feature heavily during the campaign.

The Tories will reveal their latest thinking on marriage today. Iain Duncan Smith, the former party leader and Mr Cameron’s welfare adviser, will release research that shows only 3 per cent of couples with children who stay together until the child is 16 are unmarried. He will say that about 40 per cent of children experience family breakdown, a far higher figure than previously thought.
