Hartnell studied Law at Cambridge University and has spent over 30 years
specialising in Family Law. He established one of the country's first
specialist Family Law Practices, Hartnell & Co (or Hartnells) in 1991 (now known as
Hartnell Chanot & Partners) and the Devon Family Mediation Agency
Limited - one of the first mediation consortiums in the country with a
Legal Services Commission franchise and over 20 mediators.
Norman has served on numerous Resolution and Court committees, is experienced in co and sole mediation and acts as a solicitor for parents, guardians and children in private and public law cases. He has considerable experience in complex divorce and related financial issues, and has recently been nominated to the Peninsula (South West) Family Justice Council as the Mediation representative, and is active in promoting interdisciplinary training.
He has helped Hartnell Chanot become one of the largest family law practices in the country participating in the FAInS scheme, and as a FAInS Supervisor he is involved in one of the pilot areas, and therefore among the first solicitor in the country to gain an understanding as to how this initiative is intended to work. He has represented the Board of the Family Mediators Association in discussions with the LSC concerning the expansion of the FAInS model to mediation agencies, employs an in house counsellor and has links to external psychologist/marital therapists.
Norman Hartnell was short listed for the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Award 2007 (in Family Law) and came runner up at a ceremony in London on the 28 June 2007. The awards, by The Legal Aid Practitioners Group, celebrate the work of solicitors and barristers across the UK who have dedicated their careers to the service of some of the most vulnerable members of society.
